This quilt gives the impression of a color wash with the simplest of Blooming 9-Patchpiecing…nothing but 9-patches and squares.  On the cover of the book Traditions with a Twist, it is shown in wild floral fabrics.  Our model is done in black and white.  Our students have done Christmas, monochromatic, and many other fabric groupings, all with fabulous results.   We have simplified the building process to eliminate laying out the many squares and prevent sewing something in the wrong place.

In her book, Simple Traditions, Kim Diehl writes about this quilt, “Gracefully Feathered Starsarching plumes and richly hued stars blend our quilting heritage with a taste of modern style, and the result is simply spectacular.  These aren’t your grandmother’s feathered stars!”  I say she is right; this quilt is well worth having.  There are basic pieced stars and machine appliqué.  I choose to turn under the edges on my appliqué but you may choose fusible appliqué.  Construction of the borders is simple, but very different and very good!  A little time spent piecing borders can make a huge difference in the overall look of the project.   In class you will make a sample of each technique needed to complete the wall hanging.

Much simpler than it looks, this pattern is actually made from simple 9-patch Venetian Tilesblocks!   Cut the 9 patches with the X-Block ruler, then sew them together into rows!  The cut-off pieces become the borders.  Try it with a scrappy look like the floral sample, or in a more controlled palette.  This is a great technique and you will be surprised at how simple it really is.

This is an old favorite here at our store.  It’s so simple  that all color groups are Stack n Slashreally effective.  This quilt works great with ‘themed’ fabrics, monochromatic schemes, or wildly scrappy.  We stack it, slash it, sew it, repeat.  This class is great fun – it’s a great quilt for all those fat quarters you bought on “Fat Tuesday”!  Forgiving enough to be an excellent class for Beginners!
