Summer Class List, Sneak Preview…

Our summer class list is all set and for an added treat this summer, Ann is teaching Beginners by Hand Quilting (a six week course) which she NEVER does during the summer!!

Celtic Design – Wednesday June, 22, 2011; 6:30 pm- 9pm, $30 – Teacher Christine Kryjeski

Knots the easy way! Join us as we make this little wall hanging or table runner for your spring time décor! Cut once and get 2 squares. This was started with a pattern from the magazine Irish Quilting and we have elaborated, making this fun and easy enough for all skill levels.

Beginning Quilting by Hand – Wednesdays 10 – 1pm; classes start on 6/29, 7/6, 7/13, 7/20, 7/27, 8/3/11. $50 Teacher – Ann Shaw

We’re the only store in the area that still teaches the basics by hand, and trust me; this class will make you a much better machine quilter.  Emphasizing accuracy and a well rounded basic knowledge of all aspects of the craft, we make a four block sampler from start to finish, including a hand quilting class.

Purse Class – Saturday, July 16, 2011; 10-3pm; $30 Teacher – Christine Kryjeski. This purse is nice and easy to make using 2 ½” wide strips. It has eight inside pockets, a spot for your cell phone and MP3 player too.  You can use seasonal fabrics or pick your favorite colors and go from there. The end product will be 11 1/4″ tall x 13 3/4″ wide x 4″ deep.

Pinwheel Stack and Whack – Tuesday July 19, 2011. 10-3pm $30 Teacher – Ann Shaw

Beginner and advanced quilters will find this quilt addictive! Easy to make, the result is dramatic. The trick is in the choice of fabric. The focal fabric works best when it is loud and obnoxious. The cutting can be nerve-racking, so join us for this class and we will hold your hand through the tough part.   Layer the repeats, cut triangle shaped pieces from the same part of the repeat, and create a kaleidoscope effect that is irresistible! Think ‘out of the box’ and challenge yourself to buy the most obnoxious fabric available…who can resist a challenge like that??

Quilting by Machine – Tuesday, August 2, 2011.  10 am -3 pm. $35 Teacher – Ann Shaw

This method class will teach you how to quilt on your home machine. You need a reliable machine with a walking foot and a darning foot that are made for it (the generic ones tend not to work very well).  We do a LOT of talking about the “hows” and then play with a practice piece that is included in the class price. This is definitely a ‘must’ class. You’ll definitely get some tips and tricks making your job easier.

Lone Star Quilt – Mondays August 8 & August 22, 2011; 10 – 3pm. $50 Teacher – Christine Kryjeski

The Lone Star quilt can be a challenge, but not this time!  Quiltsmart makes this beautiful pattern so easy you’re nearly guaranteed success!  Using Quiltsmart interfacing the intersections will match perfectly, and your quilt will look stunning.

Star Snowball Quilt –Tuesdays August 9 & August 16, 2011; 10 -1 pm $50 Teacher – Ann Shaw

This Quilt in a Day project uses three different 9 patches and a “snowball block”.  An excellent project for beginners or intermediate students, the ease of the method will makes a fun and effective piece.

Lover’s Knot Placemat – Friday August 12, 2011; 10-1 pm $30 Teacher – Ann Shaw

This is another great project by Quilt in a Day.  Lover’s Know placemats look fabulous in seasonal fabric, holiday fabric, and make great hostess gifts, and wedding gifts too. When you finish the project you end up with six placemats.  This is an excellent, easy project for beginners and intermediate sewers.

Magic Melons – Friday August 19, 2011; 10-3pm $30 – Teacher Joanne Witjes

This dimensional quilt is different and so much fun to make.  When we offered this popular class last semester, everyone’s fabric choices looked great.  Plaids, primitives, bright pastels and florals were successful choices. Try this fun quilt as you go method, use up batting scraps, and end up with an original and excellent quilt.

Quilter of the Month

May’s Quilter of the Month is Anne Seereiter. Ann’s interest in quilting started when a former employer took up the craft again after learning as a child. She thought it looked “interesting” but was a complete novice to sewing. She purchased her bosses Pfaff sewing machine and was given a group of three inch squares and was taught to make nine patches. Ann started taking classes and her interest and collection of “throws” grew.

In 1993 Ann purchased a quilt shop as a silent partner, not knowing much about business, retail sales, purchasing or quilting for that matter! Of course being a silent partner didn’t last long, because Ann was soon comfortable enough after a year to begin working full time at the shop.

As the shop grew, a Gammil long arm was purchased and it wasn’t long before they were able to certify students so they could rent time and quilt their own quilts. Ann’s shop also started a mystery quilt group where she and her partner would design a quilt, make a pattern each month which the group would get and by the end of the year, everyone had a quilt. It was so much fun.  Ann closed her shop at the end of 2003 but wouldn’t have traded that time in for the world. She has made so many quilts and good friends – quilting has brought a quality of life to her she never imagined.

As quilter of the month everyone who comes into the store, and the entire quilting community, has an opportunity to view the quilter’s talent and see the vast array of local quilting styles, colors and techniques. While quilts are on display, photos will be taken and a CD created so you can maintain a record of your exhibition. During the month you are displaying your quilts, you will receive a 20% discount in the store. We welcome all levels to participate in this exciting opportunity! Call the store to sign up for an upcoming month. We look forward to hearing from you.

Girls Night Out

Girl’s Night Out will be on Friday, May 27. We’ll start around 6:00 pm and go until 9:30 pm. The cost is $8.00. Don’t forget to bring your UFO’s, orphans and any other quilting projects you are working on and we’ll have a great night out! We usually order take-out, but you certainly can bring your own dinner. All are welcome and we look forward to seeing you in May.
