Quilter of the Month
Jean Butzer is our Quilter of the Month for June. Jean’s interest in quilting began in the mid-1970’s at the time of the Nation’s bicentennial although she began sewing as a 10 year-old 4-H member. Her education includes a BS from West Virginia Wesleyan College and a MA degree in Textiles and Clothing from Michigan State University.
Serving as a Cooperative Extension 4-H Agent in Genesee County for 15 years left her little time to sew or quilt. Then for 10 years, Jean owned and operated Fabrics ‘N Things in Batavia, a fabric shop specializing in quilting. She has taught literally hundreds of people to quilt between classes, workshops, and programs at both the shop and local guilds. She is an active member of both the Clarence Log Cabin Quilters and Batavia’s Museum Quilt Guild.
Her favorite quilting projects are the ones combining piecing and appliqué, and those providing the opportunity to learn and practice new techniques. She also enjoys scaling down projects to make miniatures and small versions of quilts and wall hangings. She notes scrappy quilts lend themselves to using her extensive collection of fabrics and allow her to play with color and textures. She has won numerous awards at local shows for her quilting.
A customer once told her – quilting is addicting, but if you are going to have an addiction, it’s a good one!
Quilter’s Tip
You know how frustrating it is when you are hand quilting and the tools you need are never right where you need them. The next time you hand quilt if you are using a hoop, try this: when you load the quilt into the hoop, load it upside down! Place the larger hoop against the lining and the smaller hoop against the top. This will create a tine ledge so your needles, beeswax and stork scissors won’t fall off!
