News and Notions

School is starting which means there may be more time in your schedule for quilting! As we look forward to the new season, there are many exciting things going on. Let me tell you about them; The 7th Annual Quilter’s Quest Shop Hop starts on Thursday September 5,2013 and continues through Saturday September 7, 2013; our new classes begin on September 24, 2013 and SHOPTOBERFEST is in October. We are finishing two events that have been running all summer and then there are various quilt show to attend – it promises to be a very busy, productive fall.

A big congratulations goes out to Kelly Maroni who was the first quilter to drop off her 2013 NYS Row by Row quilt at Sew What? Kelly received the 25 fat quarters first prize and is enjoying them already!

2013 NYS Row by Row

I hope you have planned to attend the 7th ANNUAL QUILTER’S QUEST SHOP HOP. The shop hop starts on Thursday, September 5, 2013 and continues through Saturday, September 7, 2013. Our doors open at 9:30 am each day and stay open until 7:00 pm on Thursday, on Friday we will be here until 5:00 pm and Saturday 9:30 am to 4 pm. This shop hop can easily be completed in one day! That’s right, the hop is smaller and more contained than other shop hops, so it doesn’t take long to travel between the shops.  As a matter of fact,  last year, someone turned in their finished passport  after only 3.5 hours! Can you beat that? Now, how about those prizes? Every shop hop has great prizes, but we think these are especially nice,  let me tell you about them. The Grand Prize will be a $50 gift certificate from each of the participating shops. In other words, you will be getting $400 dollars worth of gift certificates. Can you imagine spending all THAT money? The First Prize is an AccuQuilt Go! Baby Fabric Cutter valued at $ 139. (You will not believe how much fabric you can cut into pieces – up to six layers at a time. It is 90% faster than scissors or a rotary cutter, which will save your wrists and hands from cramping. However, the most important thing about the AccuQuilt is its accuracy; you get a perfect cut every time.) A gas card worth 80$ will go to the Second Place Prize winner and eight other $50 gift certificates (one from each store) will be given out to more winners. With 10 prizes, your chances of winning are close to 1 in 15 – not bad odds! Talk to your quilting friends, plan your route, and have a blast at the 7th ANNUAL QUILTER’S QUEST SHOP HOP.

This year participating shops are:

SHOPTOBERFEST 2013 starts Tuesday October 1, 2013 and finishes on Saturday October 5, 2013.  (5 whole days!) The hop starts at 10 am every day, and Tuesday through Friday our doors close at 7 pm.  Saturday hours are 10 am to 5 pm, although a few shops do have extended hours. What is special about this hop is it does NOT require you to go to every participating shop. However, to have a chance at winning the Grand Prize, which is a $2500 Baby Lock Sewing Machine, you MUSTgo to the MYSTERY SHOP.You only have to go to 10 of the participating shops to be entered to win any of the other prizes. Here’s where it gets interesting – the mystery shop won’t be selected until AFTER the hop is completed.  This is the slick-shop-owners way to entice you to go to all 12 shops!

Here is a list of all the fabulous prizes for SHOPTOBER FEST 2013:

  • Grand Prize which is a Baby Lock DX Jet Air Serger valued at $2499.99.
  • 12 First place prizes– $50.00 gift certificate from each shop
  • 12 second place prizes – $25.00 gift certificates from each shop
  • Gas Card – $250.00 – If you complete the Jumble on your passport you will be entered to win this  fantastic prize. (In order to be eligible to be entered to win the gas card, you must go to all 12 shops)
  • A goody bag from each shop that will have in it 2 darks, and 2 medium Autumn themed, 10” squares, a free pattern, and a piece of chocolate! Doesn’t that sound delightful?

Post Shop Hop Challenge

Our Post Shop Hop Challenge isn’t over!  Thanks  to everyone who has donated a quilt to our challenge.  We have collected dozens of quilts to be distributed to a few local and worthy causes.  If you’re interested in participating you have until September 28, 2013 to donate a quilt.  Drop your quilted and  bound quilt off at Sew What? by 9/28/13.  As a thank you gift, you will receive a card for a 25% off discount at all 10 shops.  The discount is valid for a one time purchase, and must be used by September 28, 2013.  So you still have all month to take advantage of this excellent opportunity and bring in a charity quilt!  Even if you only use the discount at the store at which you drop your quilt, its worth it.  Give back to the community and receive a deal at you favorite quilt shop for your efforts, it’s a win-win! The charities we included this year are: Newborns in Need, Roswell Park Institute,WNY Heroes, Safe Journey, and Project Linus.

Quilter of the Month

Ruth Schmatz is September’s Quilter of the Month. Ruth started quilting by hand in the early 1980’s at an old mill in Busti, New York. It didn’t take long for Ruth and her friends to become totally hooked. Trip Around the World was the first quilt she made, and she made it by hand-piecing! She liked it so much she went on to make two more, also by hand. However, once Ruth discovered how fast machine piecing was, there was no stopping her. Ruth quickly became obsessed, quilting and finishing until she eventually became a quilting instructor at the Gloversville Sewing Center, where she taught for 15 years.

Ruth and her husband winter in Florida with all the other “old people”, and she has many quilting friends in her community.   She finds quilting very relaxing and one of her greatest pleasures is watching her quilts develop into a piece of art. Ruth also has a connection with the Multiple Sclerosis Society in Jamestown, New York, and has donated many quilts to be auctioned off to raise money for research. Each of her six children has at least one quilt of their own. She is now working on completing quilts for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She has a long-standing prayer that she hopes to live long enough to finish all her projects and hopes to see you all at her 125th birthday party!

As quilter of the Month, the entire quilting community and anyone who comes into the store will have the opportunity to view your talents and see the vast array of different styles, colors, and techniques there are in our area. While your quilts are on display, photos are taken and a CD created to maintain a record of your exhibition. Also during the month of your exhibition, you will receive a 20% discount in the store. Any quilter at any level can participate – beginners to advance, really! We love seeing other people’s work styles, and don’t worry if they are not yet quilted! In fact, “tops” are easier for us to hang up!! Call the store at 632-8801 or go to to sign up for a future month.

Girl’s Night Out

September 27, 2013 is Girl’s Night Out! The “evening” starts between 3pm and 6pm, or whatever works best for your schedule – it’s  a fun, stress free night of quilting and friendship – and we finish up around 9pm. Feel free to bring your UFO’s, orphans, and any other quilting projects you are working on and we will have a wonderful and productive night out! The cost is $8 and all are welcome! We look forward to seeing you on September 27, 2013.

Quilting Assistance

From time to time, we all get “stuck” on a project, or a certain part of a project. If you find yourself with one that isn’t working out the way you’d like it too, a seam isn’t matching up or you have a ripple in your border and would like some help, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We will be more than happy to schedule a convenient time to get your quilt “straightened” out! Also, if there is a pattern you are nervous about trying on your own, we can arrange for a private class! No question is a silly question – come on in and join us!

If you have an event you would like us to share with our newsletter subscribers, just let us know and we will be happy to include it in our newsletter. Give us a call, or email us the information.
