Thank you for making FAT QUARTER TUESDAY 2014 a big success. We had a lot of fun throughout the day and it was good to see so many of you! I think this long winter had made lots of us unwilling homebodies, and the great event of Fat Quarter Tuesday gave us a wonderful excuse to get out! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and now we are looking forward to the next event. We will be vending the Amherst Quilt Guild biannual show April 11, 12 and 13th at the Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village (formerly known as the Amherst Museum). This is always a fabulous event. There is a ton of talented people contributing to this show and the venue has wonderful space to display the quilts with a lot of room and good lighting to see them by. This show is definitely worth stopping by to see, and get inspired for your next new project. Details are listed below in the upcoming events section.

A wonderful feature of The 11th Annual Western New York Shop Hop is the Grand Prize: a Bernina 210 sewing machine worth $1199! What a great prize! Wouldn’t it be fun to win that? Each shop will also be giving out a $50 gift certificate; and a $25 gift certificate and new this year, each shop will give out a $25 “In shop drawing” gift certificate. This means you will be eligible to win a gift certificate from each shop you go to; you don’t need to go to every shop to be entered for this “in shop” gift certificate. And don’t forget about the goody bag and free pattern. You will get a 6” strip of fabric and an easy pattern from each shop. Another terrific added feature of this Shop Hop: 20% off the bolted fabric from all the stores during the listed hours of the hop! Makes the trip worthwhile! We hope you will once again join us for the post-hop Charity Challenge. Last year 82 quilts were donated to one of these five local charities; Safe Journey, Project Linus, WNY Heroes, Newborns in Need, and Roswell Cancer Center. You can make a quilt in any size using any fabrics you like – maybe you can use some of the fat quarters from Fat Quarter Tuesday. On the other hand, you could use fabric that is 20% off the bolt during the shop hop to make a charity quilt, or use the free 6” strips you get as your goodie bag. Drop your charity quilt off to one of the ten participating shops by Saturday, September 27, 2014 and receive a onetime shopping pass giving you 25% off your entire fabric purchase at all the participating shops through 9/27/14. This is a great cause – it’s all about giving back to the community!
The 2014 NYS Row by Row Quilt Shop Hop is getting ready for an exciting summer. This year’s theme is “Sew a Season”. If you’re not familiar with the NYS Row by Row Shop Hop it’s a chance to hop and shop at quilt shops throughout New York State during the summer. Row by Row has expanded and includes other states such as; California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Maine, Pennsylvania, and many more. It starts on July 1, 2014 and runs through September 2, 2014.
The idea is to create a quilt using at least eight different rows (a row is a pattern from a shop you visit). Be the first person to bring the completed quilt to a participating shop, and you will win a stack of 25 fat quarters (that’s 6 -1/4 yards of fabric). If you use the “home” shop’s row in your quilt, (the shop at which you hand your quilt in) you will receive a bonus prize. For more information visit the 2014 Row by Row website http://www.rowbyrowexperience.com/ and like their Facebook page; https://www.facebook.com/NYSRowbyRow.
Project Class with Ann Shaw.
After asking for feedback, I noticed the one thing people seemed to need most for classes is TIME. I developed a class that will meet once a week for four consecutive weeks. I am offering four sessions of the class and during this time, you will be able to work on any project you like. Maybe you would like to start a new project, or are stuck on something and need a bit of help getting it done. Are one of our classes offered at a time you are not available, we can make that work in this class! Do you need structured time set aside for a sew-a-thon or maybe want to work on your project with like-minded, creative people. You can sign up for as many sessions as you want.
When: Session 2: Tuesdays April 8 – April 29, 2014
Session 3: Tuesdays May 6 – May 27, 2014
Session 4: Tuesdays June 3 – June 24, 2014
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Cost: $40/session (which breaks down to only $10/week! Very affordable!)
Easy Diamonds with Ann Shaw.
This quilt-as-you-go technique allows you to complete the quilting as you assemble each block. The backing fabric becomes the sashing on the top and no binding is necessary – how fun is that! Sign up now for your spot in class.
When: Monday May 12 AND May 19, 2014.
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Machine Quilting for Beginners with Ann Shaw.
This method class will teach you how to quilt on your home machine. A reliable machine with a walking foot and darning foot made for it is mandatory, as the generic ones don’t work well. There will be a LOT of talking about the “hows” and then we put into practice our morning discussion. This ‘must’ class will give you lots of worthwhile tips that will make machine quilting at home easier.
When: Friday April 25 OR Tuesday July 1, 2014.
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
NOTE: Kit fee: $15
Seaside Escape with Ann Shaw.
This beautiful lighthouse panel by Wilmington Prints is a summer favorite. There is a small trick to the triangles, but the quilt itself is easy to assemble. There is no charge for the pattern and we have kits available for easy piecing or feel free to use your own fabrics.
When: Mondays April 28 AND May 5, 2014
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
NICARAGUA MISSION UPDATE:
We are still collecting unwanted household items, sewing supplies, gently used clothing, old sneakers and even gently used (or new) undergarments for less fortunate people in Nicaragua. Thank you so much for those who have already donated, your generosity is greatly appreciated. The mission sends things there about 3 times per year, so you can continue to drop off your donations here at any time, and I will make sure they get where they are going. The Nicaraguans this charity helps are desperately poor, and anything you have that you don’t want or need will be greatly appreciated. Please don’t think your older clothing won’t be appreciated because you are a different size than you think they are. One lady said recently; “Aren’t they all thin? My clothes will be too big for them”. When written out like that, we can all see how silly this statement is. Trust me, people of all nations come in all sizes. Anything you have that you don’t need will be happily received by these poor people, who have next to nothing. Please feel free to drop off your unneeded items and help those less fortunate! It means more than you know!

Quilter of the Month
The Quilter of the Month for May is Jamie Wagner. Jamie learned to quilt in the year 1979, BRC (Before Rotary Cutters). Her dear friend Bonnie Patterson offered to teach her out of her home, and that was all it took. Bonnie’s sister, Judy Farnham owned a quilt shop in Lockport, the original Pine Grove Workshop, and it didn’t take Jamie long to get her dream job working there. Jamie started teaching classes through Pine Grove in 1981. She loved the excitement of sharing something new with other quilters. “I am the Sybil of quilting,” she says,”I love it all and have no distinct favorite patterns or methods.” Jamie’s eclectic style has served her well, and now she works part time and teaches at Heartland Quilt Shop in Lockport, helping customers find their own excitement in patterns and fabrics and colors. “I’m still in love with quilting, even after all this time, and the lifelong friendships it has brought to me is my favorite part.”
Jamie also has another creative outlet. She has worked at Creekside Floral in Medina for 7 years, and loves playing with color and texture with the plants too. She has two children, two dogs, and two grandchildren. She’s been married to her loving husband, Jeffrey, for 35 years, and he still smiles when pulling pins out of his feet.
As Quilter of the Month, anyone who comes into the store and the entire quilting community will have the opportunity to view your talents and see the vast array of different styles, colors, and techniques. We are blessed to have such a wonderful supportive quilting community in our area, and everyone’s tastes are so different, they are lots of fun for people to see. While your quilts are on display, photos are taken and a CD created to maintain a record of your exhibition. Also during the month of your exhibition, you will receive a 20% discount in the store. Any quilter at any level can participate – beginners to advance, really! We love seeing other people’s work styles, and don’t worry if they are not yet quilted! In fact, “tops” are easier for us to hang up!! Call the store at 632-8801 or go to www.sewwhatquiltshop.com to sign up for a future month.
From time to time, we all become “stuck” on a project or a certain part of a project. If you find yourself with something that isn’t working out the way you’d like it too, a seam isn’t matching up or there is a ripple in your border, please don’t hesitative to give us a call for help. We will be more than happy to schedule a convenient time to get your quilt “straightened” out! Also, if there is a pattern you are nervous about trying on your own, we can arrange for a private class! No question is a silly question – come on in and join us!
If you have an event you would like us to share with our newsletter subscribers, just let us know and we will be happy to include it in our newsletter. Give us a call, or email us the information.
