We couldn’t do it without customers like you! THANK YOU! Save the date for next year’s WNY Shop Hop – June 10-13, 2015. We had a lot of fun this year, and hope you did too. We can’t wait for next years hop!
Now that summer is in full swing, we hope you will take advantage of the 2014 NYS Row-by-Row Shop Hop. The “Row by Row” Shop Hop is designed for quilters to participate in a fun shop hop while traveling. Visit quilt shops while you are vacationing and pick up a free pattern. The “Row-by-Row Shop Hop” has a theme each summer and this year’s is “Sew a Season”.
Each participating shop will have a different pattern (called rows,) centered round the theme.
Collect your patterns, make your quilt with at least eight “rows” in it. If you are the first person to show off your completed quilt (quilted and bound) to a participating “Row-by-Row” shop, you will win a stack of 25 fat quarters (that’s 6 -1/4 yards of fabric)!! If you use the “home” shop’s row in your quilt (home shop = the shop where you show your quilt) you will receive a bonus prize.
The summer long hop starts July 1, 2014 and continues through September 2, 2014. There are 95 participating shops from New York this year. I’m sure you can find Row-by-Row quilt shops in your summer travels. This event has become so successful that more states will be participating this year. They include California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Maine, Pennsylvania and others. So, even if you are traveling out of state for a wedding or a reunion or something, you can track down “Row-by-Row” participating shops wherever you are. Sew What? is hoping to see many quilters from lots of different states.
Have fun with the 2014 Row-by-Row Shop Hop! We know we will. For more information visit the 2014 Row-by-Row website http://www.rowbyrowexperience.com/ and please “like” their Facebook page; https://www.facebook.com/NYSRowbyRow.

NICARAGUA MISSION UPDATE:
A big thank you goes out to all those who have already donated, your kindness will make a big impact on the lives of the Nicaraguan people. The people of Nicaragua benefiting from our donations are desperately poor and really have nothing. These people will greatly appreciate anything you don’t want or are no longer using. Our last shipment was one of the largest our organization has ever sent! The mission officers were impressed by our generosity, but they need more items for our next shipment.. We continue to collect unwanted household items, sewing supplies, gently used clothing, old sneakers, and even gently used (or new!) undergarments. (They love your old sneakers!) Please don’t think your older clothing won’t be of value due to size – people come in all shapes and sizes in every country. The mission sends donations to Nicaragua about three times a year and I will make sure they get to the right place. Feel free to drop off your unneeded items for the people who could really use our help. Help those less fortunate than you, it really means more than you know.
Quilter of the Month
Lauren Carr is July’s Quilter of the Month. Lauren married her “high school sweetheart” nearly 41 years ago. She has two grown daughters, the oldest had blessed her with two granddaughters, both teenagers now. Lauren grew up sewing clothes. It all started with making an apron in school, and rapidly grew into a passion. Lauren (Laurie to close friends) wanted to make her own wedding gown, but her mother nixed that idea, claiming that she (mom) would be walking down the aisle hemming it, since Lauren hated that part!
When they were young, Lauren made most of her girl’s clothes. As the girls grew and became busier, Lauren found she did not have the time to devote to sewing anymore. Her interest waned, even when the grandkids came along, she found she just didn’t take the time to make them clothes like she had with her own children. She had just about given up sewing completely, when
one day at work a co-worker invited her to join her taking to take a hand quilting class. Quilting? Lauren had no idea what was involved, no clue if she would even like it. But Lauren’s mom had recently passed, and she was a bit at odds with herself. She gave it a try, thinking she needed something to do to help her pass the time. 7 years later, Lauren has come full circle! Newly retired, she now works part time here at Sew What? and quilting has taken over her life! Lauren enjoys making modern patterns; bright colors are her favorites. Most of her quilts have become gifts, and Lauren gets a sense of deep satisfaction from this.
“I love every part of the process”, she says. “Except binding, which, if my mom was still here, I’m SURE she would do for me!!”
As Quilter of the Month, anyone who comes into the store and the entire quilting community will have the opportunity to view your talents and see the vast array of different styles, colors, and techniques. We are blessed to have such a wonderful supportive quilting community in our area, and everyone’s tastes are so different, they are lots of fun for people to see. While your quilts are on display, photos are taken and a CD created to maintain a record of your exhibition. Also during the month of your exhibition, you will receive a 20% discount in the store. Any quilter at any level can participate – beginners to advance, really! We love seeing other people’s work styles, and don’t worry if they are not yet quilted! In fact, “tops” are easier for us to hang up!! Call the store at 632-8801 or go to www.sewwhatquiltshop.com to sign up for a future month.
Just when you think your project is well in hand, you suddenly hit an obstacle. Anything from corners not being perfect to wavy borders and/or a binding issue. Instead of panicking, why not call Sew What? We will be happy to schedule an appointment at your convenience and help to solve the problem. Don’t hesitate to call for help if you are apprehensive about starting a new pattern – a private class might be just what you need.
Don’t forget if you have an event, show, or guild meeting you’d like to share with our newsletter subscribers, give us a call, or email us the details we will include it in the next newsletter. You can reach us at 632-8801 or email@example.com.
