Sew What? News and Notions

Can you believe it’s almost time for the 9th Annual Western New York Shop Hop? The yearly fun starts on Wednesday June 6 and continues through Saturday June 9, 2012. This exciting, prized filled hop features 11 of western New York’s finest quilt shops. This year’s Grand Prize is a Sofia sewing machine valued at $999!  There will be wonderful gift baskets worth $100 from each store and gift certificates from each store too. In addition, after you finish the shop hop, you will have collected 33 free strips of fabric and 11 different patterns – that totals over 2 ¼ yards of free fabric! Some people have used this free fabric to make quilts for charity, and some have made them into gifts or even made the projects to keep for themselves. The shops participating this year include:

Spring Class Schedule

Basic Machine Piecing with Ann Shaw. This is a six-week course meeting on Tuesdays, April 17 – May 22, 2012. 6pm – 9pm. Cost: $60 This class teaches rotary cutting and basic machine skills that all quilters will find necessary.

Machine Quilting for Beginners with Ann Shaw is a method class to teach you how to do the quilting on your home machine. You will need a reliable machine with a walking foot and a darning foot that are made for it (the generic ones tend not to work very well). We do a LOT of talking about the “how’s” and then play with a practice piece that is included in the class price. This is definitely a ‘must’ class. You will definitely get some tips that will make your job easier, making the cost of the class worthwhile. Saturday, May 12, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost $60.00

Buggy wheel with Christine Kryjeski is also known as the Carpenters Wheel and it was one of the quilts raffled off in the Amherst Museum Quilters Guild 2006 quilt show. You can make this project using a wide variety of colors or maybe you would prefer a more controlled look using one specific palette. This favorite traditional quilt is easy to construct and has a stunning visual appeal. Monday May 14, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost $35.00

Country Lanes taught by Linda Davis is a combination of simple elements, great fabrics and clean piecing. This mixture will give you a fabulous scrappy quilt. The quilt uses one single background that is very busy, which gives the appearance of more than one fabric. One of the best things about this quilt is you can use your stash – so you can then come on into the shop and replace it! Saturday, May 19, 2012 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost $35.00

Quilter of the Month

Phyllis Frisicaro is our Quilter of the Month for April. Phyllis started quilting in the summer of 2010 and has been captivated by it ever since. The first quilt she did without instruction; simply read and followed the instructions on the pattern and completed it by herself. She then decided it was time for a bit more instruction, so she meet Ann Shaw and took her first quilting class. Phyllis said, “Ann taught me everything I know.”

Phyllis finds inspiration from color, loving the way fabric looks when a quilt is pieced together. Quilting for Phyllis, is a peaceful, calming hobby she treasures. Her grandmother was a seamstress, and thinks she inherited some of her skills. We think so too! One of her favorite parts of quilting is when it’s time to bind the quilt. It is during this step that she feels she has accomplished something because her project is almost done. Phyllis is not currently a fan of appliqué, but that may change over time as she does more of it.

Because Phyllis cherishes her quilts, she finds them hard to part with – although she did just complete a baby quilt and give it as a gift. Her favorite quilt to date is Sweet Daisy Mae, but her biggest challenge so far has been the king-size Diamond Nosegays, which is loaded with triangles

As Quilter of the Month, everyone who comes into the store and the entire quilting community will have an opportunity to view your talents and see the vast array of different styles, colors, and techniques there are in our area. While your quilts are on display, photos are taken and a CD created to maintain a record of your exhibition. Also during the month of your exhibition, you will receive a 20% discount in the store. Any quilter at any level can participate. We love seeing other people’s work styles, and don’t worry if they are not quilted! In fact, “tops” are easier for us to hang up!! Call the store at 632-8801 or go to www.sewwhatquiltshop.com to sign up for a future month.

Quilter’s Tip

Do you have problems with slippery fabric when you sew? Here is an easy way to take care of this nuisance. Slip a piece of wax paper between them and sew. The wax paper will hold them together and can be torn away after the seam is sewn.
